Baptism

Choosing to “Grow” is one of the Five Choices of Thanksgiving.  Following Jesus is an invitation to grow into who we are truly meant to be.  There is always more when it comes to our relationship with God.  As modern-day disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to move from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity (Philippians 3:13-14, Ephesians 4:12-14). For this reason, we offer many opportunities to grow in our relationship with Jesus.

Baptism is an important step in our spiritual growth.  In baptism, we experience the love, forgiveness, and grace of God.  At Thanksgiving, we take seriously Jesus’ command to baptize.  “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).  Whether you are a parent bringing your child to the waters of baptism or an adult choosing to respond to God’s grace by being baptized, we are excited to be on the journey with you.

Baptism conveys God’s promises through an ordinary, everyday substance like water.  We use water in our everyday lives among other things, to clean and to drink.  In baptism, water conveys God’s promise to forgive us (cleaning) and to sustain us (drinking).  Ordinary water when combined with God’s Word, cleanses us from our past and invites us to the new life spoken about in John 10:10 “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.”  While baptism itself does not save us, through baptism, Jesus gifts us with the faith to declare that we belong to him now and for eternity.

We encourage you to experience baptism in a family gathering.  We do this because it is also a celebration of belonging to God’s family.  Through the waters of baptism, you are part of a new community called the church.  Through baptism, we become brothers and sisters in God’s family.  We want you to get to know your new family.

It is a privilege to celebrate with you as you take this next step on your spiritual journey.
